Election Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What eligibility requirements must I meet in order to become a registered voter?
  1. You must meet the following criteria: 
               -Be a citizen of the United States; 
               -Be a resident of North Carolina and Gates County for the 30 days prior to  
                an election; 
               -Be at least 18 years of age by the next general election; 
               -Not be registered to vote in any other county or state; 
               -If convicted of a felony, have had your citizenship rights restored.


Q. How and where can I register to vote?
  1. You must complete a voter registration application. If mailing in your application, please note there is an identification requirement. You can obtain voter registration forms at the following locations: 
-Board of Elections office
-Public Library
-Local High School
Forms should be completed and mailed or delivered to the Board of Elections office.
You may register at the Department of Motor Vehicles office when conducting official DMV business, or at any state agency when applying for or receiving benefits.
After your application is processed you will receive a voter card which provides your information and polling place.

Q. How often do I have to re-register?
  1. North Carolina provides permanent voter registration; however, voters may be removed from the voter registration records for the following reasons: a felony conviction; moved from the county; death; by re-quest from the voter; or if the voter has not voted in any election within eight consecutive years and had no contact with the Board of Elections.


Q. When is the deadline to register to vote?
  1. If you wish to register to vote, change your party affiliation, or change your name or address, you must do so 25 days prior to the election.


Q. What are the qualifications to run for a county/municipal office in Gates County?
  1. Must be a registered voter of the municipality/county and at least 21 years of age (Senators must be 25 years of age)
                -Must be eligible to vote for the office for which you intend to run
                -For Sheriff, required residency in the county one year prior to the  
                 November General Election
