Gates County Department of Social Services Board

Summary:
The Gates County DSS Board operates under North Carolina's Open Meetings Law. This law can be found in the NC General Statutes under Chapter 143 under Article 33C.

The primary role of county social services boards is to provide effective, responsible, and accountable public oversight and direction of the county social services department and to advise local government officials with respect to the development of policies and plans to improve social conditions in the county.  Other duties and responsibilities of a county social services board can be found in the North Carolina General Statutes under Chapter 108A-9.

Terms:
All terms last three years. Terms begin on July 1 and end on June 30th in accordance with the three year schedule.


Special Provisions:

Term Limits do not apply to the following social services board members:

a. A member who was a county commissioner at any time during his or her first two consecutive terms on the board and

b. is a county commissioner at the time he or she is reappointed to the social services board.

All other members of the board are subject to the three year term limits


Method of Appointment:

Boards of County Commissioners appoints two members of the five member Board

The North Carolina Social Services commission appoints two members of the five member BoardThe fifth member is appointed by a majority of the members of the county social services board who are appointed


Purpose/Mission:

The Gates County Department of Social Services Board establishes the county social services policy, selects director and advises the department. The Board also helps along with the director on the planning of the budget. 


Meeting Information:

The Gates County DSS Board's regularly scheduled meeting times are on the 4th Monday of

the month at 9:00 am.  The regular meeting location is in the Gates County DSS Board room

located at 122 Main St., Gatesville, NC 27938
